One of the things I love to do is groom my horse. It’s just such good bonding time to be able to spend a good hour doing nothing but being with him, and not expecting anything except for him to stand and enjoy our time together. Most horses love to be groomed, and even if they don’t particularly like to be bathed they get used to it, enjoying the attention after the water is turned off. There is nothing I like better than a clean, shiny, beautiful horse!
When I spend a good part of my free time making my horse beautiful and shiny, how does he reward that time? Most often he rolls as soon as I put him back in the pasture! My beautiful, shiny, gorgeous horse goes and rolls in the same dirt and filth I felt necessary to clean off of him in the first place.
How often do Christians do the very same thing? Every week we go to church and renew our relationship with our God. We spend time with him everyday, enjoying Him, as He enjoys us. His cleansing presence purifies us, and makes us new and beautiful each time we spend a moment with Him. However, most often we reward that time with Him by going and rolling in the same filth that He cleansed us from. How frustrated He must get with us! We can be beautiful, perfect, and clean from all blemishes, and yet we choose to roll in the dirt, effectively destroying the work He has done. What good is it to spend time with our Heavenly Father just to turn around and lie, cheat, manipulate and otherwise muddy up our lives?
Think about how you may roll in the dirt and not realize exactly what you are doing. Are your actions honoring to your Father? Or do they bring filth into your life that needs to be cleaned out? Allow your Groomer to make you clean, but for Heaven’s sake, stop rolling in the dirt!
