After eight years as a veterinary assistant, Sissy Burggraf became painfully aware of the overwhelming amount of abuse and neglect found in the world of horses. She decided to do what she could to save as many "Champions" as she could.
In Sissy's eyes EVERY horse is a Champion!
In 1994 she founded Lost Acres Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation (LAHRR), a non-profit organization for abused, neglected, severely injured, or blind horses. Located on 70 acres of scenic rolling hills in Chillicothe, Ohio, LAHRR is funded by donations and staffed solely with volunteers.
LAHRR Champions come from many backgrounds. Some are former racehorses. Others were show horses, or devoted pets and companions who, for whatever reason, were unable to remain in their homes.
No matter their origins, they all have one thing in common: they devoted 100% of themselves to serving as they were expected to do. LAHRR believes they deserve the same devotion now that they have passed what some think of as their "useful years".
Monetary donations are always welcome. LAHRR is deeply appreciative of other items as well. Blankets, halters, lead lines, leg wraps and quilts are always needed as well as smaller items such as gauze, adhesive tape, baby oil, duct tape, vet wrap, scissors, etc.
Read about two of Sissy's rescue horses, Dee and Rosie, in the story "Side by Side" in the original Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul .
The two aged mares were removed from their home by authorities after it was found that they had been kept in a barn and in the same stall for twenty-eight years. When the authorities arrived, not only was there no feed or hay, but the horses had eaten their bedding and had begun to eat the wood of the barn to survive.
